Angel’s Envy- After a quick glance at the website before I even had a chance to taste the stuff I was hooked, with the slogan “How Do You Piss Off an Angel?” The answer is hire Lincoln Henderson, godfather of Woodford Reserve and 30 year veteran of Brown-Forman. Now to steal a little content direct from the source, the story goes a little something like this:
Lincoln Henderson did it by breaking a nearly two-hundred-year-old divine contract. He’s always been one to sneer at traditions. So when he set out to create the most heavenly of all bourbons, Lincoln decided he
might have to break some rules.
See, in bourbon circles, it’s well accepted that each distillery owes a percentage of the bourbon in the barrels to the angels. This little agreement is known as the Angel’s Share, and nobody has dared mess with it for two centuries.
But Lincoln, being a bit of a malcontent, figured maybe he could put a twist on this deal. Legend has it that he sat the angels down and got them to agree that they could take more of their share if they agreed to leave behind something even better.
The deal was sealed. But when the angels snuck a sip of Lincoln’s incomparably smooth bourbon with exquisitely subtle “expressions” that came from joining 200 years of bourbon tradition with 400 years of port wine heritage, they felt they should have gotten a bigger share.
That’s why Lincoln thought it appropriate to call his bourbon Angel’s Envy. The angels, however, don’t find it funny.
Lousiville Distilling Co. is a band of the top marketers and liquor geniuses in the industry from Jim Beam, Bacardi, and Brown-Forman with Angel’s Envy being the sole brand to this point.
Now to the real question what makes it so great? Angel’s Envy is Kentucky bourbon that has been aged from 4-6 years in American white oak barrels. After this aging process, Louisville Distilling was not satisfied and had to make this spirit genuinely unique. The bourbon is then aged for 3-6 months in hand-selected port casks to create an exceptionally smooth and nuanced bourbon. Lincoln Henderson personally samples every batch to ensure the quality is always unparrelled – he is truly a perfectionist.
Try a bottle from your local retailer or ask for it at the closest bar – if they don’t have it, let me know and I’ll take care of it.
