I Woke Up This Morning and I Got Myself A Beer

Many years ago, my good friend Chris (who has a custom built drawer in his kitchen made specifically for handles of liquor) handed me a cassette mix tape he had titled “Radio Free Drinking Songs.” It was 90 minutes of songs about drinking wine, drinking beer, drinking to have a good time, drinking to forget, drinking to get drunk, and … well you get the picture. I nearly wore that cassette out. I probably played it, no exaggeration, at least 500 times.

A couple years ago I mentioned it to Chris and talked about how it was the one reason I missed having a cassette player. Well, about a year later, I’ll be damned if he didn’t hand me the same mix of songs he had burned on a CD. He had to search high and low to get all the songs, as many of them came off obscure vinyl albums. That CD is a regular when we’re all out drinking beer by the pool.

Now, in the days of iTunes and streaming music services, it’s easy to make your own drinking songs list. Yesterday I signed up to Spotify, and my first order of business was to put together a playlist of drinking songs. It’s kind of heavy on the Country side, because the Nashville good ol’ boys and girls have a long tradition of singing about the sauce. But there’s some rock and blues and even a polka. Right now, it’s at 41 songs and two hours, and that’s just songs I thought of off the top of my head. It’s a great mix for sitting around with some buddies and throwing a back a few Jim Beam and Cokes. Or for drinking a Skyy Vodka Bloody Mary on a Saturday morning and writing a blog post about drinking songs.

Here are a few songs, in no¬†particular¬†order, you’ll find on my “Drinkin’ Back” playlist to get you started on your own.
