At Drink Music City, we’re serious about our drinking. And we’re even more serious about drinking responsibly. I’m kind of notorious in my group of friends as usually being one of the first to leave a party or gathering. The reason is simple: drinking and driving is no laughing matter. Not only is it dangerous to yourself, your passengers and everyone on your route, it’s just plain stupid. And when Johnny Law comes up behind you with blue rollers in your rearview mirror and you’re over the limit, you’d better believe your life is about to change, and not for the better.
Now, we all have our method of drinking responsibly. By far, the most popular is to pace oneself, alternate each drink with water, and not drive when there’s any doubt. However, the fact of the matter is, in the state of Tennessee, if you blow a .0799, you’re getting a “have a nice evening.” But blow a .08 and it’s a whole different story. Given that, wouldn’t it be nice to always have a way to know where you stand on the BAC?
That’s where BreathalEyes comes in. BreathalEyes is a smartphone app that lets you get an approximation of your blood alcohol count simply by looking into your smartphone camera. The official story is that it detects and analyzes Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), but the real story can be seen by watching the video below. Then take a guinea pig, get him pleasantly loaded, and have him look into the phone. In moments, the phone reports a BAC that is remarkably close to the one taken by the subsequent Breathalyzer.
Now, remember, this is just an approximation, although it appears to be a damn close one. So, if your BreathalEyes score comes in close to the legal limit, have a cup of water and send your sober friend to get you a sack of Krystals. Or have your sober friend take you home. But don’t drive drunk.
