Is the World Ready for a Sober Pill?

Yes, we’ve posted here before about responsible drinking, and look what we have now: A possible new drug that would allow for completely irresponsible drinking. According to this article, a drug called dihydromyricetin, or DHM, can sober you up quicker than a cup of coffee with your mom. At least if you’re a lab rat. That’s as far as the testing of this drug has gone, except for the fact that this “new” miracle substance has been used as a hangover cure in China for over 500 years.

Dang Chinese sell us everything under the sun, then when it comes to something as important as a hangover cure, they keep it a secret for over 500 years?

So, I’m not quite sure what to make of this. Does this mean we can all take a five martini lunch, then just take a little pill and get on back to work? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Also, I wonder if the drug has any effect on liver damage. What about unscrupulous frat boys slipping a drunk sorority girl some DHM so she can sober up and they can go study? OK, so that’ll never happen.

I did find this interesting:

“It’s certainly easy to imagine how such a drug could be abused. Drinkers could become intoxicated, then take a pill when it comes time to drive themselves home.”

And this is a problem? This sound like the best thing to happen to drunk driving since the taxi stand. Not everyone who gets a little too drunk does so on purpose. I personally think it would be a great safety option to order up a sober pill when it’s time to hit the road after a long night out with the boys. It sounds like it might work better than that sack full of Krystals.

This one is worth watching.
