Derby Drinks for the Weekend


The Kentucky Derby is know for two tings – Mint Juleps and Big ASS Hats – supposedly there is a horse race too, but that is secondary to the cocktails and hats. ┬áMillions upon millions huddle around the TV “to watch” and party with some celebratory drinks.

The race itself is approximately two minutes so as is the case with most drinking events, start early and finish late.

Here is a classic Mint Julep Recipe and a few others that might float your fancy:

Mint Julep

  • 2 1/2 Ounces Bourbon (I Usually use Buffalo Trace or Angel’s Envy)
  • 8-10 Mint Leaves
  • 1/2 Ounce Simple Syrup
  • Crushed Ice

Lightly muddle mint and simple syrup in silver julep cup. Add bourbon and then fill glass with crushed ice. Stir and then top with more crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig

The Derby

  • 1 Ounce Bourbon
  • 1/2 Ounce Sweet Vermouth
  • 1/2 Ounce Orange Curacao
  • 3/4 Ounce Fresh Lime Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Kentucky Colonel

  • 2 Ounces Bourbon
  • 1/2 Ounce Benedictine
  • Crushed Ice
  • Lemon Peel

Stir bourbon and Benedictine with ice, then strain into a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with a twist of lemon.

The Seelbach

  • 1 Ounce Bourbon
  • 1/2 Ounce Cointreau
  • 7 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 7 Dashers Peychaud’s Bitters
  • Champagne

Pour bourbon, Cointreau and bitters into a champagne flute, and stir. Top with champagne, stir once more and garnish with an orange twist.
